The flag moves
The wind moves
The mind moves
Nothing is still.

Jack Sensei

On July 1, 1867 Canada became a nation. On this July first Canada will be 134 years old. Happy birthday Canada. (Scott Sensei's birthday is on the second of July. He was too polite to be born on Canada's birthday. - So Canadian -so Shorei - Kan. So polite and respectful. Happy birthday Scott Sensei)

In 1964 Canada replaced its Red Ensign flag with the Maple Leaf flag.
Shorei Kan has been in Canada since 1972 when Shihan Koyabu came to Vancouver.
The Canadian national anthem was offically adopted in 1967 with some word changes in the English version in 1980. Interestingly, it was first sung at a ice skaters banquet on June 24, 1880. The music was written by Calixa Lavallee and the words, first written in French, were by Adolphe-Basile Routhier.
It was written specifically for the St. Jean Baptist society in Quebec and it was not heard in English Canada until after the turn of the 20th century. Most of us expect a hockey game to start after we hear it. Canada also has a Royal anthem, "God Save the Queen / King". It is played when royalty visits Canada. No hockey game to follow but here are the words to our national anthem in both official languages.

O Canada
Terre de nos aieux,
ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!
Car ton bras sait porter l'epee,
il sait porter la croix!
Ton histoire
est une epopee des plus brillants exploits.
Et ta valeur, de foi trempee,
protegera nos foyers et nos droits,
protegera nos foyers et nos droits.

O Canada
O Canada Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise, the True North strong and free!
From far and wide, O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

Have a good safe long weekend and a great summer and check the calendar for the times and dates of summer and September classes.
